Project Leadership Competencies

The Importance of Measuring

Project management knowledge and experience are both easy to measure. However, leadership competencies tend to be subjective in nature and difficult to measure. Measuring project leadership competencies is necessary if project managers are to grow into project leaders.

Leadership competency development is very personal; one plan does not fit all. A project manager must have convictions about self-improvement and personal growth, and must adapt a plan to their lifestyle.

Objectivity is critical and self-assessments can get us started but having others assess us is also important. Learning and being able to practice new behaviors is mandatory. Continuous follow-up through peer groups, coaches or mentors is necessary to avoid losing momentum and relapsing into bad habits.

Measuring leadership competencies requires courage. Try our PM Promoter tool.
