MyProjectAdvisor Newsletter January, 2009 With the economy not exactly at its best, service-based project leadership is needed more than ever to stay competitive in the project management industry. We at MyProjectAdvisor have planned lots of new and exciting things for 2009 to help you along your leadership journey. To start things off, Jack’s “Introduction to Service-based Project Leadership” lecture course is now available from PM Lectures. This 2.5 hour course presents the essentials of what it means for a project manager to become a servant leader; it is worth 4 PDUs and includes supplemental worksheets. Are you a Twitter user? If so, you can earn up to six chances to win the lectures (a $60 value) for free. Here's how. You can start following Jack on Twitter here: www.twitter.com/jpferraro And last but not least, coming up on Thursday, February 19, is Jack’s popular “3 Leadership Competencies Every Project Manager Needs” presentation, in convenient live webinar format. Read more and register for free here. Given the current volatile and high-risk economic environment, employees in every industry are worried about their job security and searching for ways to make their position recession-proof, or at least recession-resistant. In other words, we are all looking for ways to make ourselves indispensable; we need to be valuable contributors. Becoming a recession-proof project manager means re-orienting your motivations. Instead of asking, “What do I want from this experience?” you will have to ask, “What does my client need from me?” In other words, becoming recession-proof requires that you put the needs of others first – that you become a servant leader. The transformational journey from project manager to service-based project leader is a lifelong one, but you can make substantial changes by simply asking yourself, “What does my client/team/sponsor need from me today/right now/this week?” By focusing on short-term commitments, self-transformation is no longer a far-away and lofty goal, but an immediate and finite task.
A journey to becoming a transforming service-based project leader is yours and yours alone. As a service-based project leader, you choose to execute your beliefs purpose through projects. In 2009, you hold a privileged and unique opportunity to combine the potency of your project management knowledge, skills and experience with your convictions and purpose, and change the world. What are you doing to spearhead positive change in your organization in 2009?
