Given the current volatile and high-risk economic environment, employees in every industry are worried about their job security and searching for ways to make their position recession-proof, or at least recession-resistant. In other words, we are all looking for ways to make ourselves indispensable; we need to be valuable contributors.

Becoming a recession-proof project manager means re-orienting your motivations. Instead of asking, “What do I want from this experience?” you will have to ask, “What does my client need from me?” In other words, becoming recession-proof requires that you put the needs of others first – that you become a servant leader.

The transformational journey from project manager to service-based project leader is a lifelong one, but you can make substantial changes by simply asking yourself, “What does my client/team/sponsor need from me today/right now/this week?” By focusing on short-term commitments, self-transformation is no longer a far-away and lofty goal, but an immediate and finite task.

In a recession, success is harder to come by for all of us, but remember, feelings of success are focused inward, but feelings of significance are focused outward, to others. We all strive to be successful, but projects leaders who value putting others’ needs first create a ‘significance’ factor which translates into a passion for their work, more enthusiasm and higher energy levels. This is how we become recession-proof!

A journey to becoming a transforming service-based project leader is yours and yours alone. As a service-based project leader, you choose to execute your beliefs purpose through projects.
